@Weegarry41 you need to use the 'tag' button around a username, rather than just putting an '@' sign before it

No worries...
Highlight the username after you have typed it, then look above the text entry box at the row of buttons - near the end of them, is a button saying "tag". Press that and it will insert the relevant code around the username.
Alternatively you can press the tag button first and then type the username in between the middle brackets - either works.
