Newbie here - throttle response

Post by simonc » Fri May 03, 2013 5:36 am

Hi all, new boy here from the depths of hot and humid Malaysia. I've been running a Del Sol for a while and have just got a lovely 1993 2.2 Prelude. It's in very nice condition (well apart from the fact that I know I'm going to have replace the shocks ,rockers arms and re-bush all round) however, one problem is concerning me that I'd appreciate some direction with.
If I'm driving slowly it seems like the engine 'dies' on me when I put my foot on the accelerator. I can feel that it doesn't want to 'go' and need to give it some welly to get the thing moving.
I thought a bottle of STP injector cleaner might do the trick but so far, nothing has changed and it's still lagging and stuttering if I'm just pottering on my to work.
Any advice or direction from anyone would be most appreciated.
Thanks and look forward to being an active member here.
Simon.

I had a similar thing happen on mine, a new dizzy cap and rotor arm cured it.

For a free fix you could try giving the points inside the dizzy cap a quick clean, see if that improves it

Also you could check if the timing is out by a fraction

Thanks so much. I forgot to mention that I've had new spark pug cables and iridium spark plugs fitted. I'll check with the guy that fitted them whether he checked the points and the rotor arm but I do know for a fact the distributor is still the one that came with the car.
Thanks again for the advice, I'll let you know after I've spoken to him and see if your advice can help solve the problem.
Regards
Simon.

welcome to LG
like others have said could be dizzy or timing however you could check a few other things quite easily and see if they help any:

sticking butterfly valve on the throttle body - remove the air intake and spray some carb cleaner into the inlet with the engine running and give it some revs to draw it through

also check the connections to the alternator - make sure theyre good

Hope you get it fixed :)
Oh and get some pics up ;)

I'd love to put a few shots up but being the complete technological dim-wit I am, I have no idea how to do it!
Is there an idiots guide to posting photos somewhere on this site? If so, please point me in the right direction
and I'll have a go.
Thanks.
