It means it's logged a fault and is running on a default value for something.
Easy to check what fault code it has logged. It's described in the service manual, but there's also a simple written description here;

nb it's better to use a bit of wire than a paperclip, if you can.

If the service connector on your car has never been used before, you'll find it's not hanging free, but is plugged into a holder (dummy socket fixed to the metal frame behind the centre console surround).
You'll need to press the tab on the plug, to disconnect/pull it out from the dummy socket.
