4g BB4 H22a - errors 17 21 & 22 (VSS & VTEC)

Post by Angus » Sun May 06, 2018 4:27 pm

Error 17 = VSS
Errors 21 & 22 = VTEC solenoid & pressure switch

My oil level is fine, the car runs and idles fine, doesn't seem to be using too much petrol. The speedo and rev counter are working fine. VTEC doesn't engage. CEL comes on after a few miles driving.

Question: if my VSS is fubared, would that also lead to the 21/22 errors? Alternatively, if my VTEC pressure switch is bust, or the solenoid, would that cause error 17 somehow?

Any ideas?

Since they are in about the same place in the engine bay, check the wiring and earths.

Makes sense. Wiring looks OK, will try and get a multimeter on them tomorrow. Ta.

Keeping the thread updated in the interests of folk searching for similar problems in future ... :)

Wiring appears to be OK. Going to swap out the oil pressure switch and VSS and see what happens.

I seem to be getting a constant VSS error, sometimes with 21 (solenoid) & 22 (pressure switch), and sometimes with just 22.

The speedo is working fine, so I'll try the pressure switch first and see if that stops the CEL - before going for the trickier-to-get-at VSS.

It VTEC's ok?

Both give inputs that are needed for VTEC to engage. I wonder if it could be an ECU issue.

If the VSS is sending signal to the speedo and that is working fine surely the VSS is working good.

That's my thought too, Merlin. Dodgy VSS, I'd expect dodgy speedo. I have a new VSS now, but am concerned at how to access it to replace - there's an enormous gear linkage bracket in the way. So I'd rather not.

What seems to be happening now is that the car will run fine with no CEL all day - until I pull it up to VTEC. It engages VTEC normally, but then when the revs come back down it throws a CEL and no more VTEC.

Can't check which error code now because I stupidly reset the ECU at lucnchtime without checking. :) I'm expecting a 22 VTEC "oil pressure switch", and I'm forming the opinion that that's what's causing the error 17 "VSS" as a side effect.

That's what I'm hoping anyway - got a new switch coming, and that's the easiest thing to swap out. :)

Well, there we go. New oil pressure switch (under a tenner off fleabay) and all errors gone. 30 seconds to swap out, with a 22mm deep socket.

Strange that when it started I got 17, 21 and 22, but they gradually went away and just left 22 (which is what it was on Thursday there).
