Sent you a PM, but if that sound is coming from inside the engine, and this is the first time you've heard it (assume you have just got the car) then you are probably in for a bad time.

I've mentioned where the oil pressure sensor is, check that. If you still have no oil pressure then consider the circumstance in which you got the car and think carefully before spending any more money.

Are you fairly decent with the spanners? It could be the valve clearances completely out but I can't imagine someone being that stupid...

Let us know the history of the car so we can advise.

Yeah that doesn't sound good. I'd remove the VTEC solenoid and have a look in the mesh filter to see there are any bits of metal after which I would consider dropping the engine oil and looking for metal. Fingers crossed it isnt rod knock. I had an engine in which the main bearings went on two rods and sounded very similar to that :(

It didn't sound knocky/hollow enough to me to be rod knock, but then without hearing it in person its hard to tell.

in a PM he mentioned the oil light isn't going off on startup - so it doesnt sound good either way.

I might be in the area next weekend if no one else is local to lend an opinion (i believe he is in Ilford).

I picked the car up from Edinburgh, got near Liverpool with it when it broke down on me, oil light came on and started shuddering. Turns out the mechanic I'd bought it off had switched the warning lights off. Starter motor was dodgy anyways which i'v now replaced thanks to Scott. Just leaves that tapping sound now to sort out.

I'm sorry to say but I think it sounds terminal.

I suspect you were sold a lemon. If the oil light was off, you were driving and it came on, then it's probably nackered beyond any sort of economical/sensible repair.

I recently went through a similar experience with a friend. honda del sol vti, bought it, half way home sounded a bit clacky. Oil light flickering at idle. Got worse, sound horrendous after 100miles. Suspect previous owner put thicker oil in it to mask the lack of oil pressure due to worn out bottom end.

We tore it down, main bairings were toast. Replace many parts, machined crank etc, problem returned some 400miles later despite being fairly thorough in the checking and building...

If I was you, Phone the seller up, if he was a mechanic I find it hard to believe he didn't know about it. Unless of course you destroyed it on the drive back? Some people might be reasonable if you call them out, after all they are just trying to dodge their responsibilities. Might get some of your money back.

Either way, it's probably easier to look out for a new vti...

Personally, id be looking at the sale of goods act for my money back since there were known issues that have been hidden and the seller is in the trade.

The noise sounds terminal, possibly the oil pumps gone and the engine lacks lubrication.

Probably be easier / cheaper to buy another engine from someone on here

Whilst swapping an engine is less work than rebuilding one, it's still an entire weekend job and you need a crane, and a spare engine.

Doubt there are many decent a5s knocking about in good condition sadly...
