Lude Generation

So the ATR has a dodgy knock sensor amongst multiple issues however the knock is doing my head in (especially when I stalled it in a busy car park and struggled to start again ) I was going to swipe the Ludes one and pop on the ATR as same engine etc however what the actual duck.

Ive been under the lude and removed the oil filter a standard 27 doesn't fit due to the plug so 27 deep socket gets on but can I for the life of me get the ratchet in there. Ive pushed up the section of loom that sits close to it but no use.

So what im asking is does anyone else have any hints on how to get this bloomin sensor out without removing the inlet manifold? Or is that the best way?

i'd just buy a new or 2nd hand one, they arn't that much - i needed one when i broke mine swapping the inlet mani a few years ago.

yeah think I will just buy one, ill still need to try and remove from the ATR mate.

I think I've just had one of those eureka-ka-ka-ka moments...whilst pondering insurance jobby stuffs...the 1/2 inch ratchets are too big and chunky however if I get a breaker bar in it should fit even just to crack it.

good man, i was going to give it a look under my lude later but if you can, go for it - there is less gubbins under the inlet on an ATR than a Prelude so you should have a slightly easier time

Buy a set of cheap box spanners, cut the 27mm one down to suit the space.

That's a good shout, off to the hardware store to check that out.

The way I did it on my Type S was disconnect the vacuum box directly under the inlet manifold and pull the whole thing out, undo the bolts that hold the loom on under the inlet manifold which will allow you to pull it down a bit exposing a direct line of sight to the knock sensor (not that you can actually get your head in there and see it lol). Next you have to slide your left hand in from the TB side of the inlet mani just by the thermostat housing, there is only one way to manoeuvre your hand to get it in there and you can only do it if your hands and arms are skinny, you'll figure it out... once you can reach the sensor disconnect the plug, now you should be able to get a socket onto the sensor with an extension and u-joint via the gap you just made taking the vacuum box out.

Bear in mind doing it this way you have to do 95% of it blind and completely by feel, so try not to drop anything especially the bolts for the vacuum box lol

good point - the two temp sensors i removed from my atr head/intake mani were both oblong obd2 as opposed to the round obd1 prelude ones.
ive still got both atr temp sensors sitting here if you ever need them

ive also got a H22a block sitting around so can check what plug the prelude has next time im at the garage if that helps any

thanks mate, both H22a engines and believe the plugs are the same on these from what I can see buying new.
