Does my car have an engine cut-off at max speed/revs?

Hi guys, just a quickie to follow up on my trip back to Singapore last Thursday. On my way down, I was lucky to hit a lovely long stretch where I was able to really put my foot down. The speedo needle hit its max of 185 kph but I was still accelerating. Obviously the speedo was beyond its capability, but as I was then travelling at Warp 10, the engine suddenly cut itself off. Just for a second it felt like there was no power, (no bang, no jolt), which of course made me immediately take my foot off the accelerator and slow down.
I panicked a bit, and nervously scanned the dash for a warning light but there was nothing to see. The rest of the trip was pretty high speed, but as the traffic had picked up, I didn't open her up like I'd done earlier.
Actually, when I stopped for a coffee and a ciggy an hour or so later, I gingerly opened the bonnet to see if anything looked amiss, like oil sprayed everywhere or a piston stuck out of the rocker cover, but to my untrained eye, all looked okay.
She's run fine since, so this is why I'm asking if a 'cut-off' system actually exists.
If anyone of you gurus could let me know, I'd be grateful.
Thanks, Si.
