Is This A gearbox Issue?

Hi Everyone,
I need some advise. I have just got a BB4 with a H22a Engine. The guy I got it off was told there is a problem with the drive train and will in time need a new gearbox. Now i'm not an auto box man. I've had them but I've had problems but never like this. When you get to 60mph you get a shudder. Now when I got in the car and drove it for the first time, I went straight to the garage thinking my Tyre pressures where a bit off. No O.K. I also noticed the steering was a bit off, Cant quite put my finger on it ,it kind of a bit stiff, drags a little. If it was a manual box, I'd be thinking wheel balancing, steering or something like that. Its not a problem, drives great, well O.K.
My question is . Is it the Box?
60 is the worst point at which it shudders. ease of the accelerator and it gets better. Floor it and its OK. Like wheel balancing, it has a bad spot, ether side and the problems are not so bad.
Thanks

Welcome.

The autobox on the 4g is a reliable old stick.
I would start with checking out the usual things you have mentioned first - Driveshafts, wheel balancing, suspension joints, tracking etc.
Also check that all engine-gearbox fixings and stiffeners are in place and check the engine mounts. You will probably find the front mount is torn. Cheap options to replace it are you can either buy poly inserts, or fill it yourself with a polyurethane sealant. Alternatively, you can get pattern part replacements for the oem item, but there aren't many places that will have them as a catalogue item.

+1 for engine mounts
or
could be driveshaft related...dont autos have a round balancer donut on the driveshafts.. :? maybe thats gone missing..and causing a wobble at certain speeds...

yeah could have had a replacement shaft or it could be an inner cv joint
