Trouble setting ignition timing

Post by Bludge » Wed Aug 13, 2014 10:50 pm

Just been out trying to set my timing and i wasnt able to see the timing mark at all. Ash.Z lent me a gun, its the old style one where you plug one wire onto the spark plug and one into the ht lead, its flashes red and isnt very bright, and a video i reference said the timing mark was red, could this be the issue?

Or could the timing mark have faded or something?

Sounds daft where are you lookigng for the timing marks?

They arent red but a machined line on the flywheel.

The red would of faded. Really you would need a strobe gun with a white light. Real easy to see with that!!!

Of if you find the timing mark without the engine rotating, paint it with tippex and it should then work fine with your current timing gun.

Yeah try and get a strobe dude. And as Ian said can find the mark then tipex it.

Did you short the service connector as well? It is an often overlooked essential step.

The 15 BTDC marker is indeed red.

ah, no i didnt short the service connector. so the mark being red im guessing im gonna need to get a different gun then? or turn the engine manually to locate the mark and tipex it?

Yeah you're pissing in the wind if you don't short the service connector before you start the engine. It stops the ECU from adjusting the timing while you manually set the base timing. With the service connector bridged the revs are slightly lower than normal but you get an audible change in revs while retarding or advancing the timing.
