Got home.
Whacked it a few times - no more problems tonight (had 3 journeys tonight)

So thinking about changing the starter motor now...
Oil leak still there - so taking to another garage...
Rev yo-yo between 900-1100rpm in P position - started to come back today too :(

Its ALL falling apart now :( :( :(

The yo yoing may just be related to the coldness, depending on severity. If I only drive mine 100 yds or so from cold, turn off, to go to shops for example, then turn back on , it rises and falls between, 950 and 1250 ish 'til the temp gauge comes up. Presumably, the stat is opening up at about the same time.

starter issues, may be solenoid on starter motor body, windings giving up or thrust bearing (?) seizing.
