Did you ever find out what was causing the problem?

I know you have probably sorted it by now, or already looked at what i am going to suggest, but when i had a similar noise i was thinking the same kind of thoughts as have been thrown about here, i decided to do the valve clearances as a cheap first step.

when i went to do the job, it turned out one of my spark plugs had fallen to peices and popped the ht lead off. new plug and all was well again.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did have a look as I hadn't already checked the plugs. It isn't that, I checked and the plugs are good. The engine runs without misfire but with the loud knock. So I took the plugs out and did a compression test. The cylinders were: 50, 80, 180 and 150 so the engine is definitely in a bad way. :/
Lack of money and affordable, good engines has prevented me from changing it yet.

Oh :(

Yep, that is definitely knackered.
Lets hope you can find a reasonably priced replacement engine soon 8-)

Just for future reference would that terraclean have cleaned out the engine? Is that another way of dislodging all the gunk nd stuff?
I had to change my engine early on aswell in my ownership but mines only a 2.0 so was much cheaper to get a hold of and my garage only charged me something like £200 to swap it, they did it in a few hours. its a shame this has happened to you, car looks clean aswell, maybe honda engines are not designed to be flushed in such a way.

Terraclean cleans the fuel and intake system, does nothing for the bearing/lubrication system (which is what Paul flushed)

I've thought about Terraclean before and I reckon a throttle body clean and getting your injectors professionally cleaned and flow checked is better although you do have to do without your injectors for a few days.

So after a long break from the car, while I did some DIY that I'd promised the missus I'd do, I'm back looking at the car.
I have an engine ready to go in, but the first thing I did was drop the sump off the broken engine to have a look inside. Not sure about the others but no4 piston con rod is bent like a banana.
