oil change, now banging
My scepticism with engine flushes is that they are supposed to breakdown the old oil so its super thin and just comes away from components.
My next worry is that you will never truely get rid of this flushes residue so U always have something breaking down your oil.
Is it going to mean the end of the world? Probs not but I just can't bring myself to use one.
Spun bearing is usually a pretty obvious sound and is deffo more of a knock (unless all 4 bearings are gone?) I certainly wouldn't describe it as a clattering noise.
Have U had a look under the valve cover to see what state its in under there?

I've tried it with new oil and it's worse than before. It's definitely a knock, in fact it's really bad. The flush can't be at fault as it's gone from not bad to wrecked in one oil change. So I guess the flush has helped something to break a little earlier than it was due to. I guess I just bought a bad one
(and shouldn't have flushed it)
I haven't really got the time, space or money to fix it. Looks like my prelude ownership was about the briefest on record. I only got to drive it around the block.

I can't decide. I won't break it I'd have to do it on the driveway and the missus would go mental.
While I'm not to be trusted with flushing an engine I'm not bad with a set of spanners. I haven't swapped an engine before. I'm not too daunted but it sounds like a lot of work.
I'll do a bit of searching, but for now, are they relatively straight forward to swap?

I guess it goes back to the don't try and fix it if it's not broken, I completely feel for you dude and hope you work something out.stinkypaul wrote:I've tried it with new oil and it's worse than before. Last year when I bought my lude I decided to change the MTF for no particular reason just thought it was a nice cheap thing to do! In doing so it took out my 3rd gear synchro! Luckily it was a good excuse to get it overhauled and change the clutch etc.
But anyway hope you get it sorted!

I think I know what happened. One of the jobs I had planned to do was investigate why it was running rich, I know why now. One of the injectors is just pouring fuel constantly when the power is on. It looks like this has put a lot of fuel in one of the cylinders and hydrolocked the engine. That would explain the instant change from Ok to wrecked. If/when I pull the sump pan off I'll look for a bent rod.
Also I videod the knocking engine, when I get round to it I'll put it on YouTube and post the link.

That would be useful.stinkypaul wrote: Also I videod the knocking engine, when I get round to it I'll put it on YouTube and post the link.
As for swapping the engine, I've changed a few in my time and the H22 is not a particularly bad one to change, by any stretch.
The most awkward thing will be the usual getting the driveshaft hub nut undone (as on any car) and splitting the suspension to pull the driveshaft out (same as on any car, it's all down to how easily the bolts come undone)
Aside from that, the only particular thing to note is that you have to tilt the engine/box to get it out of the engine bay.
If you're lucky, you'll find another experienced member/s on here that's prepared to come and give you a hand.
Somewhere on here, there's a post with videos showing a member get together and swapping the engines between 2 ludes over a weekend. @Gayno or @Confused should be able to point you the thread?
That gives you an idea of how easy it is to do.

As wurlycorner says, we did a swap between two cars, and got both back up and running again, over a bank holiday weekend.
If you're only worried about getting one car driving, then it'll take less time.
Here's some handy time-lapse videos of the whole process!
