Won't start at all!

Post by alinton » Fri Jul 17, 2015 6:27 pm

Well here's another thing. The car won't start at all now. Engine spins, doesn't fire.

I ran the checks on the main fuse per the manual, it check out ok.

Any ideas please where to check next?

Ta.

Got a spare spark plug? Plug it into a ht lead and see if it sparks.

No spare plug, so I took one out and tried it out.

Got spark.

But is there supposed to be SO much oil in the plug holes?

P.s. A bit o research tells me that plug wells full of oil means the lower seals are shot. Means taking off the rocker assy to replace them, which apparently isn't as hairy as it sounds.

However it's probably unrelated to my starting issue.

What's next?

Take the fuel line off the intake and pop it in a jug and prime the fuel pump and see if it flows out.

I still think it's the main relay.

Which is the fuel line to the intake?

Re the relay, I'm still suspicious too, but I followed the checking procedure in the manual, and it all seemed ok. 2 secs of 12v when ign switched on, and 12v on another pin when ign is on. I can hear the relay click on, then 2 secs later off.

It's actually 2 relays in one package, if I apply voltage to its coils the relevant contacts are made.

This is getting curiouser.

I've got spark.
I've got fuel at the inlet (a big spray when I switch on the ign!)
Engine turns over.

But doesn't start.

What am I missing here?

Help please!

dont know whats going on there Andy. The new main relay is on its way so you can try that when it arrives but in the meantime guess you could check battery and alternator outputs and if they are ok then its onto the distributor. Im no mechanic but if the disit is not putting out the spark at the right time......you can take the cap off the disti and check the rotor arm and contact points. I doubt any of this is much help but at least ive tried :)
