This was going to be my suggestion.

Sounds like you haven't got much to loose at the moment. Run it for the recommended time as well.

How sludgey was the original oil?

Here's what I'm going to do:
Take the plugs and fuel pump fuse out and run it off the starter to see how that sounds and if the oil pressure light goes out.
Check the oil filter for oil
If it all looks good, I'll put those back and try to run it with the new oil in.
If it's still banging (it's like a hammer hitting the cams, don't want to call it a knock yet) I'm going to assume that the oil isn't getting where it should, so a flush might not help if it can't get where it needs to, so:
I'll drop the oil out and take the sump pan off to look for obvious issues:bearings, con rods, damaged/blocked oil pump. Take the rocker cover off and check in there too.
If that all looks OK and I'm thinking it's an oil passage blocked them I might do something more drastic (with the thinking that I've nothing to lose) and (after putting the sump back on) buy more diesel and fill the engine to the top and leave it to soak. Then get all the diesel out, put oil in, prime everything and finally try to run it.
Feels like I'm digging a hole here. I'll probably find out what's wrong when I pull the covers of though.

Either way it's a lot of time (that I hadn't wanted to spend) might end up getting another engine, but I might end up scrapping it as I don't really have the time. Also all the engines seem to be £500+

... From breakers. You can defintely be fortunate enough to pick one up for around £200 (Probably with the ancillaries, but you don't need those).

What so I could go back in time and either buy a different prelude. Or go back and not flush this one :)
Was the flux capacitor a UK option or just jdm ;)

That was the Delorean, the flux capacitor itself was an American made marvel!
