dont write it off as headgasket just yet - i had a a small coolant leak that i couldnt trace so presumed the worst but turned out to be a split in one of the coolant pipes that goes to the oilcooler - was only apparaent under load and the coolant was dropping onto the exhaust downpipe and evaporating so no tell tale signs of coolant under the car. Just thought it would be worth mentioning

or a leak from I pinhole in the rad that will only show when the system is pressurised I have seen this

You can normally smell if the heater matrix is leaking. The car will smell 'sweet' and commonly, you will get condensation on the inside of the side and rear windows when the heater is on (after a while of it running) like that.
