Disappointed with AEM short ram

No, not in the key of C. An H is likely involved though ...

Disappointed with AEM short ram

Post by rugster555 » Thu May 09, 2013 5:58 pm

So I ordered my AEM short ram last week, been really excited about getting it fitted and hearing some grunt :D
Installed it today and tbh I'm a bit disappointed with it. Doesn't really sound as good as I was expecting!! Looks brilliant in the bay mind. I've got the mugen twinloop already so thinking maybe they don't really compliment each other?

I'm surprised by that. I have an AEM on my cold air intake and can certainly hear the difference between that and the standard air box.
Its quieter than the cheapo ebay filter - but then the AEM probably does some filtering of the air!

the quieter your engine on WOT with an induction the smoother it is running. Stands to reason. cant be a bad thing imo.

Ditch it and put the OEM Type S one back in. Much better.

Or if it's noise you're after instead of power, get an eBay one. :poke:

This may sound stupid but what's the resonator and where's it located?

It's on the end of the intake. You can't see it, it's located inside the front arch under where the battery is.

To access it you remove the inner arch liner (or at least drop down the front - you can leave it attached at the back of the arch, so no mudguard off etc.)
You then need to remove/plug a couple of the vacuum pipes once you remove it.
Pretty straight forward, less than an hours job.

There was a thread about a week ago that described what you need to do with the vacuum pipes, should be able to find that if you try a search.

EDIT: Didn't answer what it is  It's basically a plastic box with a flap that opens/closes at different engine loads.
It's designed to quieten the intake when the engine is under load, that's all.
Think of it like an exhaust silencer, that's on the inlet instead and is variable.

If it's noise you're after, rip out the sound deadening from under the bonnet!
I remember when we used to drill holes in our air boxes for more noise (I'm talking about the late 1990's)
