I reckon a local fabricator would be able to brace the rear upper arms for you relatively cheaply. I paid £45 delivered for these arms so the cost would probably be about the same.

No disrespect to the plate welding onto the bottom mod, but you would probably achieve better increase in stiffness (whilst also less weight, if that bothered you) by putting a few gusset/fillet plates across the existing C shape cross-sections on each arm, than by welding the plate onto the bottom and turning it into a (sort of) box section.
Both solutions will increase the stiffness of the originals though...
