Hi Folks,

I'm sure I've mentioned before but my other non-Lude is a '91 Golf 1.6 Driver. I've been meaning to start a thread for a little while, however for the past 2 months she's been the bane of my life!! :( got so bad I drove her to the end of the street and left her there for 2 weeks as I couldn't stand seeing her lol  I even considered the scrap merchants down the road

However, a hard day's work yesterday and I finally got it sorted!! Took her out for a test run and I was actually smiling whilst driving again :D after weeks of engine problems, I finally had it driving how it should be - nippy and fun once again. Had a great drive home from work today leaving my Dad behind on the corners even with his Beemer

Anyway, in celebration of me falling in love with my Golf again, I thought I'd get some photos up. So here she is after I bought her

Not bad for a 21 year old car if I do say so myself :P I've always been a sucker for the separate spots...

Image

Now she's working again I've got my mind back on mods. The original front bumper was starting to rust, so I replaced it with the big bumper along with the intent of putting the other big bumper trim on, still not done that lol. I also want the original VW steelies, the current alloys aren't bad but I had to put the spare on recently and I really like the retro look

I've also removed the eyebrow spoiler, there should be no curves on a Mk2 Golf :P angular and proud 8-)

Engine wise I'm thinking of going for the cam out of an 8v GTI, direct swap for mine and should make my 1.6 a bit angry  should be interesting with a carb set up lol. They're cheap to pick up though and swapping them out isn't too hard, so could just save it for when I want to have fun :)

Anyway, hope you all like :) and sorry for the essay, but I'm sure you all know how our cars can tug at the old heart strings every now and then :P

Never had a mk2 but always liked them, my old flat mate had one for a while but it was an auto and constantly over heated lol

That's what mine was doing :? Failed head gasket and cracked cylinder head combo :P all sorted now though and she's running nicely, touch wood!! All that needs doing is replacing the wax stat in the carb - it's the notorious peirberg 2E and is always up to something lol. For now I'll just idle a bit high

I like the old vw golfs
I owned a 93 MkIII 1.8 Driver for a month-fixed the overheating/coolant leak at the block and sold it to one of my friends who has done 5000 miles in it and its hasnt missed a beat.
I did seriously think about keeping it and selling the lude.

Cheers mate, for her age I think she's doing ok. The head gasket was annoying but at least these engines are mega simple to work on!! Now I've done it once, I think I could do it in a day or so. I hope I don't have to put that to the test :P

I saw a twin carb manifold for my Golf on eBay in January, at £90 I almost went for it lol. Shame I was busy with the head gasket at the time :x by the way, the 205 GTi is one of my all time favourite retro cars lol. I'd snap up a 1.9 if I could find one cheap locally!!

I've had leaks everywhere  problem with such an old engine is everything is perished. Replaced all the seals now though and it's watertight :) apparently if well looked after these blocks last a long time - I've just got the neglect of the previous owners (14  ) to repair then hopefully I should have some decent motoring ahead of me :) ordering the wax expansion element today so hopefully that should fix the high idle!

Well in celebration of a clean MOT pass I fitted my GTI camshaft today

Wasn't really sure what to expect - first result was I had to completely reset my my ignition timing  so got all the pulleys set up as they should be but the engine was still a bit limp  Anyway, after playing with the dizzy a bit, it seems that running advanced timing is the answer 8-) so took her out for a test drive...

Woah  drives like a different car. Pulling away like I normally would causes the car to try and shred it's tyres  the car feels like it pulls faster, and a wee bit torqueier too - can actually accelerate in 5th gear now :P

All in all good stuff! Best mod I have done engine wise I think :D

Looks very nice.
I always wanted a mk2 golf, but never got round to getting one.
I caught the Jap bug (well, Honda bug) and haven't been able to shake it 8-)
