Been ages since I updated this thread so here's a quick summary of what's happened between now and my last post:

I've snapped 3 throttle cables and had lots of fun refitting them. Turns out 2 bushes in the pedal box were drokked and they were causing the cable to fray then snap. All sorted now.

The throttle in the carb occasionally sticks open. It has almost ended me once, and had stopped for a while before I took the car off the road, I think the throttle cable adjustments I made sorted this.

I haven't used the car on the road in almost a year. When I got the Xsara I let the tax on this run out then put it on SORN, I can't remember why as it was drivable from what I recall.

I stripped all the small bumper trim off, and also primered the most shagged door.

Lost enthusiasm over the winter and the car filled with water and went mouldy. I removed and cleaned the entire interior, and left the car stripped out.

I moved house this month and the Golf was moved over with the other cars. I've put the Golf in the garage and I'm now setting about getting it back in shape, because I miss driving it!

So that's it in a nutshell

Anyway, today progress was made! I've removed the primered door as it was rotten, and replaced it with a cheap replacement I found on eBay

Image

She's now all one colour, which is quite motivating!

Image

Swapping the door meant swapping the internals. That was fun :| the door pin mechanism still needs swapping in, but I'm yet to hear back on the Golf forum about how to do that without breaking it  I also broke the seized window regulator on this side, the cable snapped under tension and lashed my hand :lol:good excuse to upgrade the rears to electric regulators, as I already have a pair for the front

Image

Next up was the dash

Image

Not a pretty sight :( so I took my time putting it back together, making sure I found screws for all the brackets as originally a lot were missing. As a result the dash is now really secure, whereas it used to rattle around. I'm hoping the interior will be slightly quieter now, although I'm not holding my breath

Image

Still got some switch blanks to fit, and there's still no sign of the drokking headlight switch!

So, my next jobs on the list:

Drill out rivets from the wheel arches so I can start fitting the big bumper trim. Unfortunately I lost the charger cable for my drill when I moved

Image

My other top priority is doing something about this

Image

I'll try and get it dried out tomorrow so I can put the carpets and seats back in. I'm still none the wiser to how all the water gets there though. I have a spare outer seal for the front door that side so I'll fit that and go from there I guess.

The joys of an old car  it'll be worth it in the end though :)

:?
The massive emblems on the dash don't look good imho. Are they coming off? Or have I just massively insulted you?

No offence taken mate :) they came off the back when I debadged the car, as I didn't like having the GTi trim on along with the GTi trim. My mate put a transporter badge on the dash of his T4 and it looked quite cool, so I tried these out on the dash of my Golf. Tbh I neither loved it nor hated it so just left it  I think what makes it look a bit weird is the proportions, the badge is a bit big for the dash. The long term plan for this car is to get a VR6 engine in it, so when I do I'll probably strip these out and get a small VW Motorsport badge to go in the corner of the glove box lid, should be a bit more discreet.

If you don't like the dash of my Golf, you're not going to like the interior of my 6G Accord once it's done

Been a busy boy last night, as I decided to fit my front electric window regulators. Manual windows suck!

Took a while as I had to build my own wiring loom  thankfully I had the OEM wiring diagram and a diagram of the pins out the back of the fusebox, so finding my live feeds was fairly easy. The Golf has a big bank of spade terminals under the dash to use as earths which was mega handy!

At any rate, I got the driver side regulator in and the switches wired up, and after getting the window back in it's runner, I now have a power window 8-) It's a bit slow though, is there anything I can do to help it along? Without the glass attached it's like a rocket, so I'm thinking maybe the glass is binding?

Also, I finally dried the Golf out :D carpets are back in now, and I'll do the seats tonight hopefully.

Hopefully get it ready for it's MOT soon :)

Silicone spray the rubber seals and rubber liners in the runners.

Also test how good the earth is too, by just temporarily hooking up a chunky earth (jump lead?) directly from the motor to the battery, to see if that makes any difference.

Cheers Wurly,

I went to town with the silicone lube earlier, I'm not sure if it's any smoother but there's a nice squeak now  I still need to lube the weather seal though, it's not in a good way so maybe that's causing trouble. The manual windows were pretty stiff thinking about it...

As for the earth, the earth from the motor switches dependant on which way the rocker switch is flicked. If I use a lead to provide a permanent earth, am I likely to blow something up? :?

Where's your sense of adventure? :|

I do like Mk2's. This'll be great with a VR6.

Don't permanently attach the new earth at both ends, just hold it on one end while you watch how the window behaves.

Can't see how you'd cause any damage, because it's just the same as keeping the button pressed down (just a direct circuit with the idea being to see if there's overly high resistance on the return path somewhere).

:? Strange that the silicone lube made it squeak

I found out why the window was slow...turns out that without the engine running the battery wasn't strong enough to wind the window up smoothly. With the motor on it's fine

Anyway, update time:

Interior is in

Image

I still need to wire up the audio, as well as replace a few bits of trim. The o/s doors need new membranes too so that I can fit the door cards.

Then my gf helped me tidy as the place was a shithole. We removed all the scary spiders too :)

Image

Then I made this

Turn into this

Image

Fitted this vital part too

8-)

Slowly getting there with her. She runs and drives, just needs all this stupid crap sorting and I'll be away :)

Can't wait to get back on the road in this though!
