The welding is potentially the most expensive single item, nearly wrote my 3g off in the summer for 600 qiuds worth, luckily I was in no hurry, so it was done at mates rates over a period of about 6 weeks, flexies for the front brake pipes sounds like the best option, rear ones are the killers, for 3g's, anyway.

 you had me going with the suggestion of scrapping it, too!

That's crazy money. They must be exchanging the driveshafts for that price?

:? How does a brake that's not working at all, not get marked as dangerous, btw? :?

To get you back moving again more quickly though... Does the 4th gen need less work maybe?

If they can find a replacement drive shaft they're welcome to fit one  Maybe they were going to fit a new CV joint or something...

They didn't test the braking force, they said that the brake hoses were so severely split that they weren't comfortable applying the brakes full on as they reckoned they would burst. They let me drive the car home though

I'd lose my free re-test though, and I'm a tight wad  But yes you're right, I don't think my 4g actually needs much work anymore. I'll see what Laura thinks :scaredtoss:

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to finding out how much an actual body shop will want :( It needs doing though, otherwise I'll forever be patching it up which will cost more in the long run I guess :?

Rather than a bodyshop, you could get prices from a mobile welder? They do far better work than mot garages, for about the same money (or less).

That's a good idea that  I wonder if they'll do me a deal on welding up the 2nd gen at the same time

Quick update:

Brake hoses are on the way, I've treated myself to braided ones and I just hope I measured everything ok

I've also just had the owner of a local body shop over to quote me on the sill. After a lot of poking and prodding around he came to £75 for a plate like on the other side, or £200 to 'do it properly' as it were. After speaking to Laura it's looking like I won't be getting another nasty plate slapped on :D

I'm hoping the brake hoses will arrive tomorrow, then I'll have to fit them, bleed the system and then replace a CV boot in one evening as I want to get it in the body shop ASAP. Like hell am I paying for another MOT
