(PUK) RH Classics Fitted

Post by NafemanNathan » Fri Feb 10, 2012 9:26 pm

Fitted the wheels yesterday. Couldn't wait til the weekend ;-) Had a bit of bother with one of the tyres though. I was getting a "wuh wuh wuhring" noise from one of them. I suspected balance, but then wasn't getting any vibration. Well turns out one of the tyres is covered in lots of little flat spots. Had the tyre man have a look at them. He walked around running his hand over them. He walked back to the front nearside and said it's this one :? I thought WHAT?! ... But sure enough, run your hand around the inside radius and you can feel it. So I've swapped it to the back. It's not dangerous and I can't feel it... I'll just live with the noise and it disappears after 20 mph anyway and I'm sure I'll get used to it altogether eventually. Or it'll help the baby drift off to sleep ;-) :D

Anyway, the pictures! I should apologise for the shockingness of them as I should all my pictures, but you get the idea ;-) ...

They're not a great deal smaller than the standard overall diameter, but being they're 15s now and not 14s, the smaller tyre profile gives an illusion on them being a lot smaller inside the wheel arches. I mean look!...

Gonna drop it eventually, but I don't really mind the look as it is :) The pictures really don't do it justice.

Will do Mart ;-)

Have a bit of a worry with it at the moment though :?

I was aware of a slight knocking noise when turning and accelerating when I bought it. I put it down to a simple CV joint, so it didn't worry me at the time (Just allowed me to knock them down on the price a bit). However, I've been driving it a bit more recently and the noise has developed a fair bit and isn't really sounding like a CV joint failing anymore... It's too "clean" a knocking. It only sounds when I turn and accelerate, close to and on full-lock in both directions. It sounds kind of like a ratchet. And as soon as I straighten up it disappears, whether I'm still accelerating or not. I definitely don't think it's the CV anymore.

So I popped it into see my mechanic yesterday and he's worried it's inside the gearbox :(

I asked on 3Geez (The international 3rd gen Accord club) about it saying...

The ALBs on the front wheels... There's no sensors on the CV joints, so is ALB engaged inside the Auto box? Could this be why my ALB light is on? (Again, I had just put the light down to a failing sensor). If so, what could be causing this? I wasn't sure if it was something related to the ALB teeth making it sound "ratchet" like. The auto box doesn't appear to be struggling and there's no noticeable vibration.

Could it be to do with the differential inside the box, hence why it only appears when I turn and accelerate?

To that the responses I've got do think it's just a CV joint. I really really hope it is, but my gut is telling me otherwise :?

I'm currently watching a 78k '89 Auto on ebay. It's died of rust. The guy's not taking any less than £200 apparently, which would be fine as I could use a few other bits from it, but I can't really afford it at the moment and I really shouldn't be taking anymore cars on at the moment anyway

Don't think so, just because of the type of noise... Sounds too "incremented".

Forgot to mention, my mechanic and I couldn't see any wiring to any sensors on the CV joints, hence why we assumed ALB (ABS by the way ) was in the gearbox. But they say the sensors should be on the CV joint on 3Geez :? So either it's a UKDM thing (doubtful), I just haven't seen them, OR they've been removed :?

Never heard of anything like that living in the gearbox.

There'd be evidence in the hub housing of where the sensors should go though right? I'm assuming they screw in?... Don't have any experience of ABS really(You may have guessed ).

indigolemon wrote:Yeah, two bolts and a metal cover usually - the alb ring itself is in right behind the hub, only visible with the discs off. You should have a cable running up the arm and arching over and through into the engine bay. The plugs are round barrel shaped orange ones, and should be in the engine bay side (the wire enters the bay through a rubber gromet).

Had a quick look for them last night before it got dark... They are there ;-) We had tried looking for them whilst the car was on the ground and from the front, which is why we couldn't see them.

I'm gonna try jacking up the from end tonight and popping it in drive, then turning the wheels and having a look to see if I can get close enough to identify where the noise is actually coming from.
