I had a similar thing happen to my old white lude, came to a stop at a roundabout and one of the front bolts had come off and the caliper slid off the disc, no brakes at all! Lesson: never rely on someone else telling you they have done something without checking it yourself ;) I think you can get a rebuild kit cheap enough for the callipers its easy to do as well. The most common problem is the handbrake cam inside the caliper slipping over its threshold and resulting in no hand brake on that wheel. The only way to avoid that is to not let the pads get too low. If yours are at the point of slipping over they could be getting stuck in the vertical position something else that happened to me a long time ago i took the wheel off and hit it with a hammer, gave the handbrake a few yanks and it freed off. At least no one was hurt lucky escape I say. Finally, I used to have a ford cougar and the brake pipes corroded so badly they burst at a junction which I flew out of and nearly hit the wall on the other side :( that was another brown trouser moment, it only had its mot about a 3 weeks before

Had my mot just before jae, told the tester to slam the brakes on due to being stood for awhile...burst the passenger flexi pipe on the front. Very lucky it didn't happen on the road. Replaced both.

Glad your ok and didn't end up as something serious

Similar thing happened to me in my old wagon too. seized rear caliper boiled the fluid and had to pump the brakes to get them back. happened on a national speed limit A road. pressed the brakes to slow for a bend and the pedal just went to the floor.
Pulled over and the brake was smoking and the wheel was hot to the touch.
Pulled over at a pub a mile or so down the road and let it cool for an hour then limped it back home

iv not long had the front drivers side caliper seize up on me while out. had to pull over with lots smoke coming from the wheel area.

AA called out and guy was brilliant - caliper off, stripped it right down and showed me the fkd rubber seal - which caused it, seal was perished and allowed moisture to get in, made the piston sticky till it jammed on hard.

he freed it all off, cleaned it up enough to get me home, then next day drove carefully to the garage and had the caliper replaced under warranty which was a result!. happy about that as the back passenger side caliper got replaced last year under warranty - so only 2 to go now then all calipers will be new hehe ;) :D

poppy is dead.

went out early this morning to do some final Xmas shopping and started the lude up. she fired up and died. then nothing. so the first thing i checked was the main relay. unplugged it and it was absolutely full of water and completely corroded. i cleaned the relay solder joints and re soldered them but im afraid mine is dead and my car still wont start. so next to check is the main circuit, holding the plug that connects to the relay, i used a jumper wire on the plug pins 5 and 7. turned the ignition on and heard the fuel pump prime. so that is a bit of luck, now where to get one? a guy on eBay who i bought my front pipe from has one from a uk spec 3rd gen, mine is mitsuba main relay rz-0045 with a black outer cover and the one he has is brown with a different rz number. does anyone think its compatible. both cars are 3rd gens pre facelift and both relays are the 7 pin single plug type. and now for the hunt for the water leak. bloody cars. happy xmas

Well that sucks :(

I'd say give that mains relay that guy has a go. The codes on both my '94 and '95 BB4s are different, but are interchangeable.

Speaking of which... Did you ever find that 4th gen Mains Relay?
