@Musashi here is how i sorted out my pcv pipe. as i had to replace the angle intake pipe due to splittings i have now just drilled a hole into it and fitted some silicone hose to a piece of aluminium tube.

Thanks for that, helpful to know. I might see if I can reattach mine to where it was blanked off on the original intake duct.

In brief, what is the actual benefit of PCV? and what ill effects can you see from having the breather filter instead? I am assuming some idle-issues...

Your PCV simply wont work if at all with a breather. Air cannot be forced into a breather unless you put a mini turbo system just for the breather. . Its has to be forced through a tube from the air intake.
The PCV recirculates gasses and pressure back into the combustion chamber from the head to the intake. Gases pass through the combustion process and need to be vented somewhere. Oils and vapour also pass which is what you use a catch can for.
Forced induction and high PSI engines usually retrofit the PCV system to 2 points on the front of the cover above the exhaust to release the gases and pressure more efficiently since the stock PCV wont be able to cope.
