Righto, some progress. Had been chipping away at them an hour an evening when I could.
They had some more time in the solution;
Image

It still didn't get everything off, but it was starting to eat away at the main casting, so enough was enough!
Image
Image

Then some of this stuff;
Image
No idea if I'm doing the right thing, but whatever... :lol:

2 coats of Acid Etch;
Image

These were new, so were just wire brushed down and then acid etched. The zinc coating on one of them was utterly jobby - came straight off under the wire brush, with no effort at all.
Image

Then brush painted (far easier to touch up on the car later) with "Jazz Blue". It's a great colour, albeit a bit 'bling' in metallic really I guess :lol: But the current colour theme on the car is blue features and the new wheel nuts are metallic, so meh.

Brake discs were second hand off the BA8.
Wire brushed down and then went for a different angle on these, with Halfords Anti-Rust primer (ordinary primer but with some zinc in it I think).
Image
Image
They're far from perfect - no wear, but some pitting as you can see.

Either way, far, far better than what was on there before :lol: ;

:?

Anyway, the 'new' ones were finished off in Halford High Temp Metallic Black (which is far from black :roll: )
All sorted, ready to go on;
Image

New Nipparts pads;
Image

Then it all turned into being a right arse, couldn't get the handbrake cables off the old calipers to swap them over, rusted/rounded off bolts etc. Generally a right PITA :evil: Even one of the pad retaining springs turned out to be broken clean through :bat:
Image

All back together, complete with new pivot pins covered in loads of silicone grease;

Not a fan of how the metallic black turned out on the discs at all. I'll probably repaint them in gloss (proper) black. nb: faces of the discs aren't intentionally painted, just overspray and it doesn't matter cause it will just rub off anyway and ensure everywhere that doesn't brake is fully protected :P

Anyway, then onto the easy bit, just bleeding the new calipers out...

Fluid in the master cylinder had looked fine and I will be fitting braided lines in the future so I'd only planned to just bleed out the rear and then do a fluid change when the lines go on (as well as repainting the rear dust shields that I didn't have time to do now). However, the fluid had dropped low, revealing this in the bottom
:?
Image
Errr...
Image
Image

It had got outside the strainer too into the main reservoir, so full fluid change needed :evil:
Took 2 fooking hours to get it clear, the back drivers side and front passenger just would not come out bubble free, time after time and over the course of half an hour, the rear passenger caliper had 3 massive farts (pedal suddenly dropped to the floor, massive full splurge of crap and air after it had been running pretty clear for a while). Had never had that before - think the back system had been properly gunged up with jobby.

Still not happy with how the pedal feels, but it stops well so if it passes the MOT, that's good enough for me at the moment.

All that crap added time so I couldn't get it MOT'd today, so it's booked in for 8:15 tomorrow :scaredtoss:

Loving the caliper colour! 8-)
I was tempted to do mine this colour. I think I will if I ever do them again. :P

Nice work, acid etch #8 is probably the best base primer you could have used, it's excellent stuff. Calipers look great. 8-)
