I got around to stripping the built a7 head down for inspection and a clean last night...



It wasn't that dirty at all really, but it needed to come apart anyway, so I'll be cleaning and sprucing it up a bit as I go...











So top plates and caps off...



And already I can see some scoring on the Pro 2 cams and journals ...



The pictures don't show it very clearly, but it's all treatable at least ...





So cams out and Vtec solenoid off amongst a few other bits...





And then shear off the temp sender!!! ...





I hate those things! You can see how someone has sealed it in. That's going to be fun to remove So I might just leave it and possibly fill it with liquid metal. I can run a temp sender from my sandwich plate anyway. I've got another for comparison to see how many threads are still engaged.

Followers and LMA's out...





And nearly there. Looks pretty clean...



Last removal job was to remove all the BC retainers, springs and valves...











And now it's ready for a dunk in Gunk...



I left it in a diluted 50/50 mix of Gunk and water over night. (Diluted just to make up some volume so the ports are submerged, as I only had 2.5l left.) So we shall see the results tonight. I've ordered 10 more litres of Gunk, so when that turns up I can give the valves and a few other parts a good cleaning session to

I would get another OEM sensor and put it back in so you have the OEM water temp gauge as well. There is nothing wrong with having two water temp gauges

I just remember trying to remove the one from the 3rd gen's thermostat housing after that one snapped. The remover tool just screwed further into the remains of the sender and split the thermostat housing rather than unscrewing the sender remains I really don't want a repercussion of that again

I'll have a look and see what I can do though. It's obviously soft enough, so I might just go straight for the drill

Good work bud. My personal favourite is the meticulous nature of each part coming out and placed at different levels of the box. You know I'm a sucker for organisation.

Be interested to see how the 50/50 solution soak cleans it up.

Has to be done right?

Yeah initially I just poured the 2.5l neat over the whole thing and gave one of the ports a scrub with a toothbrush (Stace's). It was baring metal right away, so I thought it can't be that caked on. So I diluted it as said and have left the tub propped up at nearly 45 degrees so that the exhaust ports are completely submerged.

Also (And I might be completely wrong) I though I'd paid nearly £20 for my last 5l of Gunk. Yet last night on ebay Auto Performance were selling it for £6.71 with free postage. So I bought two!

I've just looked again now, to confirm the price I paid and they'd obviously made a mistake, as they've since put their price up to £12.95 each! Get in!!!
