3g's are bigger rot boxes than 4g's - they just rust in slightly different (and more!) places, not places that show up straight away, like 4g's.

Both of my 3rd gens were excellent, Yes Rusty but very minor. However is it's known that the quality of steel was much better in the 80s. Struggling to find the evidencewurlycorner wrote:RattyMcClelland wrote:The metal used in the late 1980s was far better than the 1990s. The 3rd Gen simple dont rust like the 4th Gens and 5th genErr... I beg to differ!

The structure (number of skins and shape of them) on a 3g is a drokking nightmare for capturing water in between panels, not letting it drain out and meaning that by the time it's visible, it's gone a long way. Much worse than 4g's in that respect, which have a simpler structure.
I cut up a 3g if you recall and posted the pictures (somewhere...) on here showing what the sections look like inside the sills and arches. They also suffer around complex hidden areas on the scuttle and around the front/rear screens and the front chassis box sections.
Steel quality wise... You might be referring to the time when there was a big uplift globally in using recycled steel but they hadn't got the quality control right, so there was a lot of contamination in the steel (e.g. from scrap cars they wouldn't seperate the copper sufficiently when melting down, so the alloy contents were all over the place). I recally being taught that that had lead to poor strength (in rolled material) or porosity in cast items though, rather than increased rust in sheet metal?
The japs tended to use thinner gauge sheet for cars than the rest of the world, too.
Jay - sorry for the thread derailment here... If you want this discussion about rust and metal quality stripped out of the profile about your nice lude, let us know and us mods will happily move the offending posts elsewhere

Re: Jay's Prelude
Ok so I thought to myself I'm spending so much money on the car so might aswel spend a little more & do the job properly. So the car is getting a full respray in its original colour!
Here she is getting prepped:

Lights out, mould strips off, mirrors off, door handles off, had to take off front door cards to get to the mould strip clips in order not to break them.
Filled all ripples & pin dents:

I am debating on whether to do the mould strips red colour coded or re do them black. Opinions please. Thanks for looking

Re: Jay's Prelude
Thanks man, I'm still really stuck as to what to do, seen pics of both on Google & they both look so goodrrobis wrote:I'd go with black as it does look better on 3rd gens imho. All around the car

Likewise, I would go with the original black look, will just look 'lost' otherwise. its a nice bit of detail that breaks up the side slab and accentuates the length of the car.
Also, on a practical note, they are rubbery, so won't paint well anyway.
Window trims on 3g's are a complete rhubarb to refit.
