Mother f***ing speed bumps..
Post by bb1boy » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:51 pm
Ok so lately my local council seems to have decided to spend the next 100 years budget on covering the towns in speed bumps ..or should I say speed mountains?! There are some roads I physically can't drive down any longer because I can't get my car over the bumps (and my car isn't even that low!) without hitting my front bumper/downpipe/tailpipe ..I'm also pretty sure that these speed bumps/speed cushions (massive square lumps in the middle of the road) are slowly ruining everyone's suspension, ball joints and tyres etc.
My question is: who do I complain to and am I going to need a million signature petition to get the bumps ripped up?
I wish they would use all the tarmac that makes speed bumps and pour it in to all the damn pot holes that are everywhere down here.

Have a look on your local council website, they should have a roads and highways section that contains contact info.
Some roads are local council maintained, some are county council maintained (normally only major ones), some are highways agency maintained (really major ones). Start at the bottom and if you complain to the wrong one, they'll tell you soon enough
Good luck though.
I successfully (and easily) claimed off Essex County Council for a crash caused by defective road surface once, but I wouldn't expect much success rate for speed bumps, provided they meet whatever highway agency guidelines??? (they should be able to check/confirm that last bit for you though?

Yes, agree entirely. I've been tempted to start reporting them as 'inverse potholes' in the road.
On a more sensible note, they are, by law, meant to be no more than 10cm high. I fully intend to get a plank of wood and some 10cm tall blocks and then check a few near my flat. I'm totally convinced they're a crapload higher than that!

Good wood plan! The ones near me must be more that 10cm's high. Loads of them have huge gouges taken out of the top where cars are dragging themselves over the inverse potholesindigolemon wrote:Yes, agree entirely. I've been tempted to start reporting them as 'inverse potholes' in the road.

Yes, take your template and a camera and get some pics, I think that's the best way to prove your case.

Yep, you need to do that - I sent in pics of the damage to the road and drew a plan of the area with the damage drawn on etc. along with my claim (letter). In my case they re-surfaced the road straight away, then accepted laibility and paid up.

There's some bad ones near me, have to physically stop in front of the speed bump, then crawl over them at 1mph.

well it sounds like your all catching up with me round here lol I don't mind speedbumps pers'e its just there is no set speedbump they are all different.
I slow down for all of them but some feel like your climbing a 1:4 others seem to just do their job and that's the problem no consistency some feel like your driving into a kerb others are smooth its ridiculous and I would love them to be just 10cm high I am sure I could stop on top of one of them and see the front of the queue over the top of a range rover
