Fuel economy - 4g vs 5g

Fuel economy - 4g vs 5g
Post by BrettGee » Sat Jul 13, 2013 6:09 pm
According to autotrader's stats, a 4th gen 2.2 vtec manual does approx 4 or 5 extra mpgs over an equivalent 5th gen.
Any truth to this? Is a 4th a much lighter car?

I bet there's no noticeable difference in fuel economy to be honest.

Yeah - I very much doubt it will be anything you'd notice. Possible exception might be the 99+ 5G's due to the closer ratios? Sure @Merlin would be able to confirm/deny that.

Any truth to this? Is this because 5th gens have bigger headlights and cause more drag?

Any truth to this? Is a 4th a much lighter car these days (because of all the bits that have rusted and fallen off)?

Out of interest, what do the official figures suggest I should be getting from my 4th gen?
My rough workings gave me an 'average' MPG of 25-30 across a few tanks. That was with a daily commute of 70 miles total. My all time worst fuel economy was 17.5mpg on a tank iirc, too much hooliganism was to blame. Best fuel economy ever was when I bought the car. I got roughly 40mpg driving at about 55-60mph back from Hampshire, I was driving slow so my girlfriend could keep up in the golf.
As for short ratio boxes, you wouldn't be complaining if you saw how short the gears were on my Scirocco. 70mph has you sitting at just over 4,500RPM in 5th. Absolutely dire for long journeys
