Well I was on my way arrond the m25 heading for a BBQ and stared to hear some funny knocking coming from the engine, pulled over to the hard shoulder and the engine sounded like a bag of nails. So I instantly thought well there go my mahle pistons
So called the AA and while I was waiting had another look at the engine and sure
enough the crank pulley was wobbeling all over the place. I've never been so releaved to have something fixable go wrong wiwith my car

Ah jobby man, I know EXACTLY how you feel - mine went (the first time  ) on the M25, think it was about J15, went over that big 'dip' in the road, loud bang, power steering gone etc etc.
At least you know what it is, really best of luck in getting it sorted asap.

Yeah standard pully so i'm toying with getting a lightweight underdrive pulley on there instead.
Anyone got any recommendations on a good pulley

Same as me, had this happen to me twice now.

Hope you get it sorted Simon. When you get time, take off that wobbly crank pulley and see if there is no damage. Most of the time the pulley is the one that gets damaged and not the crank. I was lucky enough and Ratty gave me his old pulley. Honda want £250 for it but VTECdirect can get you one with a woodruff key for £150ish. :!:

I've got the second hand pulley on and the car runs sweet, except the power steering as I didn't get that belt. I will go to PAW sometimes next week when I book with them. Then my car is road worthy so give me a shout if you need anything and I'll pop around. :geek: (even though I won't do nothing as my skills are limited)

Yeah I think I managed to stop the car before there was any damage fingers crossed.... so hopefully new belts and pulley should be good as new ;)

I've been offered a H23a pulley but I have no idea if that is the same as the H22, anyone know if this will fit?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you get it rectified asap

It seems the crank pulley is a common issue with the H22 engines? Why do the crank pulleys come off? is it a bad or flawed design ?

Scared to rag the lude incase this will happen. lol - maybe honda engine arent bullet proof afterall

I haven't pulled mine off the car yet but as I understand it the pulley is made in two halves with a vibration damping rubber part joining the two. This supposedly reduces torsional vibration induced in the crank when the engine is running. The rubber perishes over time and then the pulley outer breaks away from the pulley inner causing it to all fall apart very rapidly.

Sorry to hear this Si, hoping there hasn't been any major damage and you can get it on the go again quickly!

It is wierd how many of these we're hearing about all of a sudden (and on some 5th gens as well as 4th, so car age doesn't seem to be any real indicator?!).

Anyone know if ATR's suffering as well?

What's the count of 5ths / 4ths we've seen I wonder..?

Populate the list below?

4th:

5th:

Yeah cheers mate, it does seem like a common issues and I've not heard of any ATR that had had the issue.

My built engine is a little misleading though as it is a OBD1 engine from a 4th gen originally..... so actually the crank pulley is a older 4th gen pulley ;)
