Lude Generation

I could be referencing myself in this post, but no...

Im just trying to figure out how many pennies I should pop in the jar to set aside for future works. So I thought I'd borrow your collective knowledge.

Suspension - currently on the original coils and shocks, is this something I should bear in mind and think of changing in the next year or so? What would be a ball park figure re cost? (An AA man worried me with tales of collapsed suspension).

Clutch - still on the original, seems fine. Is it an expensive job? Currently on nearly 80k and not sure of the average lifespan? (I realise a lot depends on driving style etc).

Is there anything else that I should put on the list of potential future jobs, parts that should be swapped out, etc?

Main one I can think of is if you're unlucky you may start to suffer 5th gear crunch, it's a known problem with the Lude.

No worries, as far as I know it's repairable but it's a gearbox out and new 5th gear jobbie so probably not cheap. Cheaper to put a new box in, see it as an opportunity instead of a burden, a nice chance to put an Accord Type R box in

Also just read about the shocks, mine have done 80k and are fine. Ones on my Dad's Lude have done around 120k and one of the rears has just started leaking so needs replacing.
Depends how and where you drive at the end of the day, if you're on smooth roads and not dropping the car in potholes or flying over speed bumps they'll go forever. I know the shocks are horrendously expensive for genuine ones though, Lings have the shocks themselves up for just over £200 each.

On the other hand I feel it disrespectful to the old Lude not to engage warp drive from time to time

you need to stretch those legs! don't need to be gentle on it too much haha.

Have a look over all your bushings and suspension components as those take the most wear have a local mechanic or dealer give you a full report on what needs to be replaced soon or later and go from there.

As others mentioned it definitely depends on driving habits and road conditions.

cam belt and water pump i would say if it hasnt already been done

I changed my gearbox oil a few weeks ago, made a massive difference to how the gearbox felt, it's fantastic now!
Easy job to do yourself as well. Filling can be a faff though, I did mine using a squezze nozzle bottle.
