Recommend me a double din HU

Post by Shiny » Tue Jun 28, 2016 11:01 am

Thinking about getting a double din for the Odybus, budget £200/£250.

Quite fancy this http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... /AVH-280BT

I have the 8300BT single din in the ATR and like it, although that has an SD slot which i would prefer over CD/DVD. I guess if a unit plays DVD though i can record mp3's on it?

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

No. Unlikely to, to be honest, as it is parked on the street. The kids (not that they are kids anymore) have those portable DVD screens that strap to the seats if they want to watch something on a long journey.

Just something for me really, not fussed about the radio as it plays bum droppings, would like Bluetooth phone answering and decent sound quality for my awfully awesome taste in muuzak.

I was looking at double din's for the Elgrand but since I have two built in screens I dont want another so am going for a single din DVD (no big screen). TBH the thing I want from a head unit a big volume wheel/button thing, they are not common on double dins :(

In Elgrand circles the Pumpkin's seems to be popular http://www.autopumpkin.com/

Beginning to like the look of the Pumpkin lol. I can't seem to work out the difference between all the bloody different models on Amazon. Need some serious study time!

HEllo, if it helps i got myself a pumpkin unit and its been brilliant so far.
this one ->

I got it because it had a 7" screen, micro sd card slot, quad core processor, 16gb internal mem for apps, hig res screen, no cd drive and had physical buttons for the main things like volume.

You can also get it with a reversing camera if you wanted to.
I've got a 128GB micro sd card in there holding all my music, but can also use spotify or youtube if i want.
The navigation sofware it comes with is ok but maps are a bit outdated so i paid the £17 for a year of TomTom.
The unit uses my little wifi modem to internet for live traffic etc, but can just tether to your phone
And my car also has an email address so you know... instant cool points

And lastly for extra customization ive upgraded the firmware on it to some from the xda developers forums.
Would definately reccomend :)

Also p.s just looked on amazon, the below is the new version of the unit with a newer version of Android (5.1 lollipop)
Currently there is less support for custom firmware on the unit but would be more futureproof so would pick that one.

Offloading 5th Gen bits.

Top man. I've been trying to work out the difference between the one you have and this one

My lad says yours has better resolution, but i've just sussed out that the second one has a CD/DVD slot?

I can't really decide between the two.

I take it i can bluetooth with my phone for incoming calls etc, does it come with a microphone?

Most my music will be on SD card, save messing around with CDs in the car. Probably won't use Spotify etc to be honest.

For the Sat Nav, will free ones work? I'm sure there will be plenty of them available on Android. I can park the car next to the house and get Android.

What is the sound like and the touch screen quality?

Thinking about getting a package with the little reversing camera as the rear of the Ody is about 1 mile away

Cheers again, sorry for so many questions.

No worries, i will answer all i can.
The one in my link is a newer model compared to the one in your link above. My second links is pretty much the same spec (with the high res and newer internals) running Android 5.1, so i would say go for this guy ( Android 5.1 car stereo) then buy a compatible reversing camera for the unit separate.

Rather than considering a reversing camera I’m trying to justify this

But if you plan to mess with the Android firmware go for mine in the first link.
This forum is full of info but will take forever to sift through, Look in the second post firmware for RK3188 MTCB for pics of the modded stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=3246370

So for questions...
1. Yep you can Bluetooth using both units
2. It comes with a horrible internal mic, and also a plugin one that you can wire to anywhere in the car (this one is much better quality.)
3. micro sd card is great and super easy, you just need to format it in a specific way. Officially it wont support over 32GB, but they are liars or incompetent :D
4. Sat Nav you can use what ever you want. It comes with navigation software which is very good, just the maps are a year old. But as its just running andriod like a phone or tablet you setup ur google account and email then get onto the play store. So you can use google maps, waze, tomtom etc, your choice.
5. Sound quality is decent 4 x 50w i think. Can go pretty loud, but im no audiophile. Depends on your source i suppose, flac will sound much better then 128kb mp3's.
6. Touch screen never been any issue for me, responds well and buttons all big enough to hit while driving.
7. Will also work with steering wheel controls.

Just word of warning as these as mass produced cheaply in China somewhere so people do get odd hardware issues, but amazon have no probs changing the unit its just annoying if yours is affected.

If yu are anywhere near Glossop you could always come on down and have a look and play to see if its what you want.

Also ahaaaaaaa found it on their site :)

I also have a pumpkin unit (the second one you linked to with the cd/dvd drive) and I highly recommend even though I am on my second unit. First had a fault and it took 3 weeks to get replaced but the guys at pumpkin responded to mails quickly so no big issue. Most of the delay was because it was Chinese new year at the time. I bought direct from Pumpkin, maybe i wouldnt have had the delay if i used Amazon. I also went for the reverse camera from them. All in all it is excellent value for money
