6 Car Myths That Cost You Money Every Year

Post by JayJay » Fri Mar 02, 2012 10:56 am

His explanation of knocking is AMAZING:
It's because those engines like to squeeze the gas and air in a super tight piston-driven bear hug, and the gas can sometimes get too excited and prematurely explode inside the engine (presumably while muttering shameful apologies into its shoulder). When this happens, it causes a phenomenon known as detonation or "knocking." Even though the engine tries to reassure the gas that it's perfectly natural and isn't anything to be ashamed of, it still wouldn't mind if the gasoline got a little help with its "staying power," which comes in the form of higher octane ratings.

I've always thought changing your oil every 3000 miles was a little excessive. I probably do mine every 2 years, so every 7,5k to 10k.

^^^^for a 4th gen that would be fine, its a rough old beast.

It comes down to usage and care i think...
Some people dont change their pants in a week. is that ok as well? it is because after a week they will need cleaning for sure but wont walk away on their own... same with oil imo. if its been used a bit change it.

anytime the dipstick comes out anything but golden it gets the oil dropped, fresh oil in, hard rag up the road, drop oil again, change filter, put in new oil.

happy engines run on love, not just oil...

that det explanation just makes it harder to understand!

LLL - the oil will always get dirty, it's just it picking up the carbon on its rounds. Replacing all the oil because it went a bit black is a huge waste of money, the only way to know if the oil has reached its limit is by sending a sample away to be tested; only then will know you if the oil is still able to do its job or not.

Think of it this way, if your pants were designed to clean you at the same time and they could last 5 cleans, would you change them after one clean then throw them away (bit of a waste seeing as they still have 4 cleans left) or wear them until they've done their job?

I change my pants every 3000 miles or every 6 months. Whichever comes first. :stupid:

*shrugs

If i had those pants i would not wear them at all. iv been commando for 15 years  i prefer to keep my junk and my clothes clean daily. yes this means i have to buy more clothes over a decade but i look good ALL THE TIME.

Put it like this. i will change the batteries in my RC car before they totally run down. im not bothered about getting the last bit of energy out of them and seeing it go slower and slower. i want full pelt all the time. if this means loosing the lower 20% of their usefulness? care.

oil is 'good' for 10k? maybe. it is 'best' for 6k then. I'll have the best and leave the good for everyone else...

or 4th gens  :P
