3D print of a cupholder lid

Post by simonc » Mon Jun 16, 2025 8:42 am

Morning, fellas. Well, it has been a bit of a let down with the lid for a number of reasons. First, the damaged cog part finally gave up the ghost and snapped clean-off; bummer.
Then after much faffing and generally head scratching, I found that the trailing edge (as per the photo) is not flat (you can see the raised diagonal lines of material left during the print process) and so it doesn't fit flush on top of the holder; another bummer.
And finally, there's the colour, which hardly blends seamlessly; arrgghhhhhhh...
So it's not exactly been a marvellous weekend with the lid however, to look on the bright side, I don't have an empty hole staring back at me. So I'm going to put Blu-tack underneath it, hidden from view, to level it up and give the appearance of a beautifully fitted OEM lid.

Do you know in which material is this printed? Car interior parts are made from ABS in factory, lid should have similar shine as the bin if made from ABS. This printed part looks matte which makes me thing it was made from inappropriate material. Bussinesses that do FDM printing (stacking layer lines like the part you got) usually use reliable machines like Prusa or Bambu, but neither of those are good for making car parts, they cannot achieve necessary chamber temperatures. If you want, send me the STL and I can give it a try. Scanned parts usually are not directly printable and require some CAD work to beef up sensitive spots.

Good morning, @Brozilla and that's a brilliant offer, thanks so much. To answer your question, I do not know what material they used to print the lid and you are correct, it is a matt kind of finish. Can you pm your email address to me please as I have to send the files via WeTransfer being that they're pretty large.
Thanks so much for helping me. :D
