It is sort of Latin I suppose, Ananas is the genus and I presume is taken from the name in the native language of where they were discovered by the English (guess). Pineapple is simply descriptive and some languages reference the pine lookey likey, e.g. pina colada is a pineapple drink.

Same with the citrus fruits, we know them as citrus because they all come under the same genus.

the word used for it is usually determined by when it was initially found ie: before Henry the eighth more likely to be a latin/ French derivative word.
I say Henry the eighth but English started to assert itself more before that when the Norman kings started to try to annex France.

If memory serves, the use of Latin names for the Genus' of plant names, post dates the use of old English / French / latin names around the time of Henry VIII.

There was of course no word for the pineapple when the Brits first got to see it in the 16th century, so an older word for pine cone was used as a description.

After a week of not being able to drive anything but the A6 due to my insurance ending over the holiday season, I finally got my motor trader's insurance policy sorted today :) For the first time ever all of my cars are insured at once 8-)
