Yep. The more I look into it and think back to what it's like under there, the more I think the sub-frame will prevent me dropping the bottom of the engine, so it's either a weld it up in situ, or engine out job. Definitely one for the back-burner...
EDIT: one of these exact engines being broken on ebay atm, wants £100 + postage for that part (minus the sump pan on the bottom). That's still too much IMO!
Yep it's rare and is something that if someone needs one, they're sort of in a 'have' to buy it, but it's also not a perishable part, very unlikely to be needed, plus I could probably get mine welded up for less than that, so at £100, he could end up holding onto it for a very very long time... Once I've had a proper look to see whether it's an engine out or not, job, I might offer him £50 as a take it or leave it. I need to get under the car anyway, to decide its fate...

Yes that's exactly what it is
E. coli HB101 + pGLO plasmid (araC, bla, GFP). Making a nice restriction map with ClaI, XhoI, HindIII and all the double digest combinations between, with λ phage for control on the left. I'm sure this must be on every bio-type degree program.
Second time around as well... some dunce connected the electrodes the wrong way around so it all kindly migrated off the back of the gel
