Yep. The more I look into it and think back to what it's like under there, the more I think the sub-frame will prevent me dropping the bottom of the engine, so it's either a weld it up in situ, or engine out job. Definitely one for the back-burner...

EDIT: one of these exact engines being broken on ebay atm, wants £100 + postage for that part (minus the sump pan on the bottom). That's still too much IMO!
Yep it's rare and is something that if someone needs one, they're sort of in a 'have' to buy it, but it's also not a perishable part, very unlikely to be needed, plus I could probably get mine welded up for less than that, so at £100, he could end up holding onto it for a very very long time... Once I've had a proper look to see whether it's an engine out or not, job, I might offer him £50 as a take it or leave it. I need to get under the car anyway, to decide its fate...

For what it's worth, I had a Celica once and drove over a rock smacking a hole in the gearbox, I fixed it with a tube of that chemical metal stuff, like metal putty.. I put it over the hole and never had a problem again! I know it's ghetto, but it worked.

Gel electrophoresis? What is the source? The human monkey hybrid you have been working on? :?

Find the poo slinging gene, chop it out of the gel, whack it into a PCR machine, find a suitable virus vector and infect a load of fetus'. I know your game ;)

Yes that's exactly what it is  E. coli HB101 + pGLO plasmid (araC, bla, GFP). Making a nice restriction map with ClaI, XhoI, HindIII and all the double digest combinations between, with λ phage for control on the left. I'm sure this must be on every bio-type degree program.

Second time around as well... some dunce connected the electrodes the wrong way around so it all kindly migrated off the back of the gel

Last time I did something like that was 12 ish years ago. In the lab we used to have agarose gel fights with pipettes. You only won when you got it in someone's ear.

There's not a lot we can get away with really, CCTV :? I did get a quiet word after being caught pretending I was in starting blocks at the beginning of a session a few weeks ago.
