So I've come in this morning, thankfully backup on Friday night passed so no data is lost should the worst happen.

Replaced one drive, started the RAID rebuilding, but it's taking a long time! Currently at 68% and it's been going for nearly 2 hours. Hopefully the second drive rebuild should be a lot faster......... :?
2 failing drives on the same array? What RAID level you using and what's the controller, software or hardware based?

RAID 5 on a HP Smart Array. Yeah it was dicey! They were marked as "imminent failure", so I've got the one in and it's JUST no finished rebuilding! Now to replace the other!!

ooh, playing with fire! Great you've got some fresh backups though, nothing brings peace of mind like that!

I've done a lot of research in this area after suffering from some badly configured systems at a place I used to work (and all the corresponding failures thereafter... ) Your best bet is to setup systems on RAID 10 if you can because parity bits on RAID5 and RAID6 systems add unnecessary complexity and I have heard of numerous people experiencing corruption on RAID 5 systems.

Seems to be the trend for setting up One Big Array in RAID 10 then deploying the OS and the data drives on them as separate logical partitions. I've been doing this for a while now and its works excellently, although RAID 10 can be a little more expensive than RAID 5 for the same level of storage admittedly. Some good articles on places like Spiceworks about this.
