Brakes for me, a good set of discs and pads.
If it's specifically for the 5th gen, getting a set of ATR calipers and the carriers so you can use the larger 300x28mm discs.

Under £250.......that's cutting it.
My first mod on my 5th gen back in 2008 was a P SPEC short shifter. £120 IIRC. Absolutely changed the gearshift and made it's super short. Going from 4th gen to 5th gen I hated the longer throw the 5th gen has. This solved it and made it shorter than the 4th gen.
You cant get PSPEC short shifters anymore.
Or
Tanabe chromoly rear sway bar. Made the rear end turn in so much better. Was £200 back in the day. You cant buy it anymore.
DC5 steering wheel..... definitely.
Classic 90s Alpine headunit....would beat most headunit today for SQ but lack modern features now. But period correct. Although they are holding their value now and likely priced too high. Alpine 7000 series.
Lightweight flywheel.....but do with a clutch change and it's not under £250.

I went from Auto to Manual and it cost me about £200 in parts (16 years ago
). It transformed the car.

There is a guy on the Lude Behaviour Facebook page that is selling a pair of H22a8 cams for £70. https://www.facebook.com/groups/9599737 ... %2CO%2CP-R

When you start to add them all up, there’s a lot of improvements out there for the Lude.
Some though sadly not available. I’d love a p spec shifter.
Some of those mentioned, I have, but there’s always more to chase down.
Ratty, I still have your old Tanabe anti roll bar, and was certainly well worth it.

They are the same as ATR cams, aren't they?Merlin wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 11:44 amThere is a guy on the Lude Behaviour Facebook page that is selling a pair of H22a8 cams for £70. https://www.facebook.com/groups/9599737 ... %2CO%2CP-R

I'm gonna say I'm not wholly convinced I've noticed a huge difference from the 300mm discs and ATR calipers after I fitted them to the BB4 this year

I'm glad I did it, because scene points

Yeah, all H22 red tops use the same cams (the S, H22a7 and H22a8).wurlycorner wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 9:26 amThey are the same as ATR cams, aren't they?Merlin wrote: ↑Tue Nov 28, 2023 11:44 amThere is a guy on the Lude Behaviour Facebook page that is selling a pair of H22a8 cams for £70. https://www.facebook.com/groups/9599737 ... %2CO%2CP-R

If you are using similar brake pads on both setups there will not be any difference in cold braking performance. On a road car under normal driving conditions, you won't see a difference in braking between OEM and upgraded brake setups, as larger brakes (calipers and/or discs) are useless unless you are making them get hotter than the OEM brakes can deal with. Bigger brakes do not directly equate to better braking performance under normal driving, the equation for friction (F=µN, Friction = Coefficient of friction x Normal Force) doesn't allow it.wurlycorner wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 9:29 amI'm gonna say I'm not wholly convinced I've noticed a huge difference from the 300mm discs and ATR calipers after I fitted them to the BB4 this year
Fitting ATR calipers without going to the 300x28mm disc will not give any performance improvement, it might look better though, as the same normal force is being spread over a larger contact area, reducing the coefficient of friction, and keeping brake friction the same.
I fitted the ATR calipers and 300x28mm discs to my 5G as I drive lots of country roads (VTEC Yo!) and occasionally go on track. When I was running OEM 282x25mm discs on my BB4 the surface of the discs would end up cracking due to the excessive heat, 300x28mm slows this process while allowing greater hot brake performance, and the 330x32mm chonkers that I use with the KSport's are even better at dealing with the heat, but even they succumb to the heat eventually and crack.
Basically, in my opinion, it's worth going to the ATR calipers and 300x28mm discs on the off chance of some fast driving on a hot summers day, or if you just like driving fast and put more heat through the brakes
