It goes dark because it's collecting carbon, and synthetic oils (even semi-synth) can carry quite a bit before they're full (basically). Hence sending a bit of oil off to be tested is the only way to really know if the oil cannot do its job properly anymore.
There are other reasons the oil degrades, but changing it as soon as it changes colour is just madness. Once a year at the most should be more than enough for modern oils. Stick to a good schedule, use quality oil and filters and she'll be more than fine. Spend the money on other maintenance rather than so many oil changes.

I totally agree jay. I guess i also like the idea of all the bits swimming about in the kind of oil you see on the adverts
if im honest the derve 2.5 gets new oil every 7k and the lude will get done at the start of the summer and then maybe twice more. this will include a visit to the nurburgring though. thats one before you go and one when you get back imho....then into the garage come october.
the derve oil never gets black. you can always see it clear to some extent

Id Rather have a peace of mind.. I've had a oil problem before and it cost me a engine... yes it wasn't to do with the oil it self.. but i rather change the oil and filter to help...
Another thing.. look at main amount of people stripping down there engines to do work on them recently.. (rocker covers off) see how dark/brown it is inside and how its dried/stuck to the engine.... that's not normal.. mine is like new inside... i rather change the oil and keep my engine clean inside ( as clean as possible anyway..
) to me a clean engine will always be better than a dirty engine

Aw crap, accidently changed the page before submitting my post
LLL - Track driving and long periods of sitting doing nothing will require the oil to be changed more often, so that makes sense
STK - yeah it's down to everyone what they spend their money on, I'm just saying it's really not required to change your oil as soon as it goes dark
I don't change mine that often (once a year) and it's perfectly clean inside. I think thats more down to the oil used and how the engine has been used (sitting idle for a few months?).
