There is some legislation/human rights thing to do with the UN anyway. Many countries split, reform etc. I think the most recent split is Sudan? There's now a South Sudan. If the Isles are that against Scottish independence then it seems to me they could reasonably stay within the UK or go alone themselves, although that seems extremely unlikely.

@BBMC:

sound.

It was a good one and i am glad have your points and opinions to add to my knowledge of this situation. Thanks for coming in to it :D

@donald: I think the islanders dont really consider themselves scottish first and foremost is the key. they feel more afinity to skanda as a homeland (atleast the ones i have met) if pushed, but british before anything else. it might throw the whole thing into touch if they call for westminster based rule over scotgov. I cant see how scotgov could refuse? As BBMC said the last recourse would be troops into the islands but then wales ireland and not least england and the EU would get well involved.

they wont ask for total independence though. no point.

Agreed, no point in it, they would lose more than they would gain. But much smaller areas/populations have gained independence :lol:

Thanks for your input guys. I now have a better idea of the issues that are important north of the border. This has given me plenty to think on.

As a proud scot I am still wary of a complete break away from the rest of the UK. We have seen in recent years the troubles smaller countries like Norway and Ireland have imploded when the bank crisis kicked in - had Scotland been independent 4/5 years ago would we be in a similar position?

I have yet to see a solid argument to change my mind and give a definitive 'Yes'. What about defence for example? Is Scotland going to start its own Air Force/Navy/Army (Scottish Battalion has a large proportion of English!)? Not only would we need to put together the troops but also the Machinery and weaponry which would cost a pretty penny! And would we include ourselves in the European Union/Euro debacle?

Questions Questions. Personally I want to keep the union at the moment. All for further devolvement of responsibility to the Scottish Government but not a break away!
