Would always go for tripods.
Used them for years (tripods) and never had an issue.
I will say always have your jack under there too (not load bearing, but not far from it) as a precaution.
On mine I have 4 stands, a heavy duty jack, and two sets of wheels stacked. If anything gives way, I am safe in the knowledge I'll be fine under there.
Call that being over cautious, but when you've had two wagons drop from just being on Jacks, you make sure your covered!

This, if its a quick up and down I use axle stands but I also put a couple of old wheels underneath for security and leave the jack in place for extra security. I bought stands that had supports around the bottom so no legs to sink into the tarmac.johnm wrote:Would always go for tripods.

Having dropped a car off stands in the past I always give the car a good shake to check for security before I get under it....

Years ago I dropped a mk2 golf with big bumpers on my mate luckily it wasn't that low but low enough to stop him getting out. The front splitter was touching his neck so we left him at the side of the road for an hour while we went fir a pint with just his body sticking out from under the front no head lmao

Not related entirely but still relevant, when I was still a heathen scaffolder the min. sole board size we used was 18" x 9". Was standard practice to use the same on loading bays rated for 2kN/m^2, so LLL's suggestion will more than cater for a car.
